I bring you...a very rough sketch of one of my Skyships...in 5 years maybe I'll get a response!
I quite like the look of this.Is that the pope riding it?

Ooh, I'd love to see a cleaned up version of this...
Thankees for your kind words folks. Nope, its not the Pope, they're Cloudpreists. I'll post a scan of their concept sketches in due course.
Fantastic design - Please post more! Can we have any more details regarding the cloudpriests?
>>616Certainly! However, not for a few days I'm afraid as I'm away from all internet access as of...one hour from now until about 14:00, Sunday (British GMT).However, I promise to upload information and sketches regarding the preists on my return.

I'm planning a project (tis rather a secret project - you may hear more, youmay not) and i wouln't mind a hand in finding a good deal of decent steampunk styled cogs and gears. Images of, that is.Thank you!Pic related. I'm not sure how, but Kato is ALWAYS relevent.

Yeah so. Crappy concept sketch ahoy. False screen name because I don't want people chasing me, just some tips.Anybody here know how gears and such work? If so, the image linked in this post needs a look over to see if it could make sense. The gyre replaces burning coal - it powers the boiler the same way, so don't mind about that. Fantasyfag aspect. The file there <---is the same ship.Anyway: http://yfrog.com/0v05062009164128j

This disturbs me greatly.Steamchan is dying. I propose a push - let people know about it any way you can.this has the potential for greatness - the greatest repository of steampunkers around.So. Spread the word, please.Don;t let it die a much undeserved death!

We die not, we simply slumber, like the great cthulhu.
Just a LITTLE more action would be interesting though. You know, not too much where you have to >>replybut just enough to stimulate the imagination semi-regularly.I see this place, judging on the quality, as the SteamPunk/CyberPunk headquarters; too much mention/action plays out any subject.Personally I'd like to be updated about the Steam and Cyber world and people through this chan though.Just some quick thoughts.Pic not related.

Agreed, it also seems to be a good place to work out the community's idea of many different popular steampunk subjects, as well and a place to publicise steampunk media.
I would love to see steamchan flourish but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Megachan is more active and they have steam and cyberpunk boards too. They are more watered down though. Anime and whatnot.
Waves I'm new. You're not dead yet.
Gentlemen, it has been suggested that I ask of the /s/ community what food they feel best reflects this epoch and general ethos. The image I post is one of faggots - excuse the wordplay. It is a delicious English meal and one which I feel faithfully represents the thoughts and ideas behind this era - delicious, yet aesthetically pleasing.

Seriously?I really can't imagine swashbuckling airship Captain Octavius Stanhope fresh from the lands of the Dragon Emperor, telling tales of the Mad Lama of darkest Tybet over a plate of steaming hot faggots. They're pretty much made of everythinggrotty, not practical - just manky. Like all the bits that are left.I like the idea of beaten up victorian tinned food. Easy to store, long lasting, easy to eat and probably vaguely nutritious.

Somehow I agree with >515, in a imaginary setting. Though historically speaking, enormous english-style dinners would appear to be more or less the norm. On the subject, I highly recommend (If you can find it) "Frigate Pallada" by the Russian author Goncharov. A non-fiction account of a sailing vessel's travel to Japan, at the very beginning of the age of steam.

Faggots are not only nutritious, delicious and easy to prepare, they equip the adventurer well. They are inexpensive and as mentioned above, are made from parts of the animal which would otherwise go to waste.Other steampunk dishes might include fish and chips, I reckon. Which incidentally go very well with faggots.

>>519 Fish and chips?WATFish and chips really isn't that much of a practical dish. a bitch to cook - think of all that wasted oil! Very little in the way of nutritional value, too and the taste (or lack of) probably wouldn't warrant selection for the dinner table. And, while it was around at the time, it's more like suggesting that in a clockpunk - renaissance setting, everyone ate pasta.Salted, baked or boiled meats would have been the norm in a victorian era, with rich, over the top desserts, when thinking of feasts/ dinners.when thinking of the adventurer's menu, i still fail to see what is so great about faggots. they wouldn't last more than three days, and would probably be preety unpalatable after the first - think of a sausage that's been cooked and left on the kitchen table all night. pickled, salted, and dried foods would be far more practical, not to mention a preserved citrus fruit. corned beef, spam, stuff like that would be more on display in an airship galley. something basic that;s lasst years, so as not to waste it.
What is that made of exactly? I'm in a Culinary Program, and this may be the beginnings of a paper.
Preserved is Practical!
I must say I think fish and chips would make a splendid meal. Not only is it nutritious and tasty, it could be very easily cooked in an airship galley (requires boiling lard or vegetable oils, which is extremely easy to do, the fish doesn't have to be fresh out of the sea, and the spuds can be lower grade or unusually shaped). While it would not make the best food for a lone explorer, or a small team, as long as one or more chefs were available (i.e. on a larger airship) then this meal would be perfect.

Nutritious?Dude... It's all rank and fatty and totally, totally heart attack inducing. But i guess it is really easy to make, and VERY no-frills, which i guess totally fits the steampunk thing. So i find myself agreeing with you, sir.
It would not be heart-attack inducing in the age of steam, where physical exertion would play a significant part of anybody's day.The meal itself is not unduly fatty anyway - a decent faggot is predominantly protein, with fatty streaks adding to the flavour and texture.I shall use this opportunity to make or procure one, and disassemble it with photographs in order to persuade you chaps that this is indeed a meal fit for the world of steam.I shall not pretend that this is not an excuse to indulge in deliciousness.

So, where are you gonna get the pig innards from?
Favorite Stumpunk piece that contains neither steam nor punk? This one is mine.

Can someone explain to me how Mark Twain influenced steampunk? I don't remember steampunk in Tom Sawyer.

No steam, just punk.
What do you mean nor punk ?I don't consider that there is punk in steampunk.

>516 I've never really seen that sort of stuff as true, core steampunk. All mark twain is is an example of fiction from that era, that utilised the modern transport of that era. One would hardly say that because Murder on the orient express contained steamtrains it was an influence on the genre. Not enough sci-fi or fantasy too it.Admittedly, specific storied may be influenced by the situations within the novels, they really have nothing to do with the genre other than the time they are set in.

In my opinion, Steampunk should not contain fantasy, only sci fi element, as it is a subgender of sci fi.
Or more precisely, must contain sci fi but can contain fantasy even thought it's not necessary.
I've always seen Steampunk as more of a Sci-fi genre, with a vaguely lovecraftian-styled undercurrent of fantasy.
>No.602 The above-mentioned A Night In The Lonesome October is an example I guess of the Lovecraftian mythos in a Victorian pastiche. I don't see scifi and fantasy as totally opposing; I was always under the impression that Steampunk was just another subgenre of Alternate History whether it had a fantastic or scientific bent.

Just got around to watching "TinMan". Mmmmmm… Steamy. Trouble it it's an awful movie, mainly because Zooey Daschanel couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Fun visuals, though. (IMHO.)
I think that was Danny DeVito you were seeing
Agreed on the Zooey Daschanel bit. also, doesn't she seem a bit too old for the part? Just a thought. A definite watch, if only for the eye candy...

I think Repo would be more Retrofuturism allmost...
How the fuck has Steamboy not been mentioned yet?
Sky captain is more dieselpunk, too, and it's pretty damn painful to watch...

Totally. Wormtooth nation is pretty damn good, and all free!
Well what the fuck is it? Seems to me to be a mishmash of Steampunk and Cyberpunk aesthetics slammed into a wall of the earlier 20th Century. Basically between 1900 and 1940. I like the sound of it, and I've heard that Skycaptain and the World of Tomorow is considered to be very Dieselpunk, but is that it? Others say Mad Max. Any ideas /s/teampunkers?
Personally, I think of it more as an alternative name for whatever-the-fuck genere that the two Crimson Skies games take place in.
It's steampunk but steam engines replaced with diesel engines (/IMHO)
Then again, I feel that Deiselpunk always had a bit more of a Noir setting to it. Sort of like that Animatrix short... The Detective was it?
I agree with Clauss.Generally seems to be the sound of it.Maybe a bit more emphasis on capitalism and industry.

(steampunk cons that is)
Are there any in Britain that anyone knows of?
Here's a neat steamish gritty wallpaper I found elsewhere.
They fire steam-powered photon torpedoes!
Thats the last of it for now...
Well, I for one, garnered great pleasure here.
Thanks allot!
